Understanding Valances & Cornices

Valances and cornices are top treatments used to finish, frame, or soften the upper portion of a window.

A valance is usually made with fabric and has a softer appearance. It may be flat, pleated, shaped, gathered, or combined with trims and decorative details.

A cornice is typically built over a rigid frame and upholstered with fabric. It creates a cleaner architectural line and can help conceal hardware, shade headrails, or layered window treatment systems.

Both valances and cornices can be decorative, functional, or both. They may be used alone or combined with drapery panels, sheers, Roman shades, or other soft window treatments.

In custom workrooms, the proportions, returns, mounting depth, fabric choice, and finishing details all affect the final look.
